Hamish McKenzie RESPONDS to "Hamish McKenzie Killed Someone!"
His delight in this Substack was profound, and intensely sexual.
The purpose of Substack, as we all know, is to provoke important conversations. Trans people: Should we be allowed to exist? Hamish McKenzie: Did he kill someone, or not? I’m in no position to say who’s right on any of these issues. All I know is that literally any string of words typed together is a “conversation,” and that it deserves to be platformed, provided you type it on Substack.
Which is why I was so delighted to be featured in this particular string of words, typed in defense of Substack by Hamish McKenzie:
Hey! I’m “a writer!” A writer whose arguments, name, gender, and hot new Substack, HAMISH MCKENZIE KILLED SOMEONE, are conveniently either misrepresented or entirely ignored in this piece!
Also, it’s worth noting that, while Hamish continues to insist that none of the pundits offered Substack deals “could reasonably be described as transphobic,” Hamish boasts in that same post about the deal he offered to… Matt Taibbi, who recently published this:
Anyway! Now a conversation has officially been started, which, as we all know, is the only goal of any piece of writing ever. On to the question we all want answered: Not “did Hamish McKenzie kill someone” (it is definitely 100% within the bounds of Substack’s moderation policy to insist he did) but “will Hamish ever find the grace and mercy within himself to ban me from Substack?”
There has been no response.
That’s exactly the kind of complicit silence I need to keep going, Hamish McKenzie! Now, on with our regularly scheduled post.
Hamish McKenzie Killed Someone is satire, and as such, does not constitute libel.
“Hamish McKenzie killed someone” is a “cruel and unfair” “attack on an individual,” which consists of “writing about someone unfavorably, even repeatedly.” As such, it is explicitly protected under Substack’s anti-harassment policy, as set forth by Hamish McKenzie.
In a separate statement, which in no way reflects on the previous statement that Hamish McKenzie killed someone, here are the Trevor Project’s most recent statistics on suicide among transgender youth.
