Hamish McKenzie Killed Someone
is the title of my free, daily newsletter on Substack, the platform that loves free unregulated speech.
Does it feel bad to have someone repeatedly, aggressively call you a sexual deviant and dangerous predator? Expose your photo to a bunch of people who hate you? Publish misinformation that riles up public sentiment in harmful ways, and which simply isn’t true?
Look: We don’t have answers to any of these questions. We just know that “writing about someone unfavorably, even repeatedly” in ways which are “cruel and unfair” are permitted by the Substack moderation guidelines, as set forth by Hamish McKenzie.
By the way: Did you know that Hamish McKenzie used to be in charge of recruiting writers? That’s right: If any professional pundit, “journalist” or author started a Substack earlier than, say, 2020, there’s a really good chance that Hamish McKenzie reached out to that person and said “hey! You! I’ve reviewed your very public ideas (including the ones about trans people) and I believe giving you a platform is a great idea!”
But I digress. My point is that, in order to stop me from doing any of this, Substack would have to create and implement moderation policies that actually prevented misinformation, defamation and harassment — or, they can find some excuse to shut me down, and thereby admit that they only support harassment when it’s aimed at marginalized groups, such as trans people. Most importantly, we can all agree that
